Three to One: Gender Disparity in the African-American community.
There are almost 2 million more black adult women than men in the United States, evidence to how often African-American men die before their time. Among the cities with the worst gender disparity in America is Flint, Michigan with a ratio of nearly three women for every male. The loss of brothers, husbands, fathers, and sons in the community leaves loved ones behind to pick up the pieces of family and community. Subsequently, the overwhelming number of eligible bachelorettes creates a sometimes competitive dating market. Many in the community recognize the dire consequences of this disparity and make an effort to change at the grass-roots level, like Ryan White, a barber who spends his shifts creating awareness with his clients about kidney failure. Or Victor King and Adrian White, young dedicated fathers and partners who want to be the family patriarch they never had, and John Rhymes, who empowers at-risk male youths to be future leaders in their community.
